H.S.C.L.- Home School Community Liaison
Hi, My name is Kevin Shortall and I am the Home School Community Liaison Coordinator in St. Aidan's.
The Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL) has been running in Ireland since 1990. It is there because it recognises that parents and guardians are the most important teachers in their children's lives. The scheme also realises that the community has a lot to offer the school and the school has a lot to offer the community. So, my job is to build bonds and links between the school the, homes and the community and break down barriers between the school and the people and the community it serves.
I visit homes very frequently and am always on hand to sort out a problem, offer advice, provide information and advocate for parents or find something out for them. I am on the side of parents and guardians and am not involved in discipline issues. I do however help parents to deal with these issues if they want me to. I also help organise educational courses and social opportunities for parents. These are always very popular. It is the aim of the HSCL scheme that parents and guardians would be more involved in their local school and more involved in their child's education.
In the community I am involved in many groups, agencies and committees. I represent the school in as many places as I can. This means that families and students are represented too. In St. Aidan's the students and their families are central.
If any parent has any concern, question, idea, issue to raise, would like help with a problem, would like to visit the school, find out about any course or activity or arrange a home visit, please contact me: Kevin Shortall on 0879972723.
