On the 15th of November third year class, St. Kevins, went to the Civic Theatre to meet popular author Fiachra Sheridan. It was a great day and everyone had a blast. Fiachra told us the background of his novel, ‘The Runners’, and what encouraged him to write it. The book is based on the author’s own experiences of growing up. He grew up in Ballybough in Dublin in the 1980’s. His parents didn’t have a lot of money but that didn’t matter to him, Ballybough was his home and he loved it. Growing up for him was hard though because his dad drank and he also had friends who were sometimes a bad influence but he kept away from it and had a great life.
The main character in the novel, Bobby, was actually based on Fiachra himself and describes him in many different senses. We get a taste of what life was like back in those days. Fiachra read a few paragraphs from his book to us that kept us intrigued and wanting more.
We had question & answer session and Fiachra gave us pointers on how to be creative. We then got pictures with him and he autographed copies of his book. During the Q&A session he decided to give prizes for the best question. Well done to Kimberly Thai and Stephanie Doyle for winning them!!!
Roddy Doyle praised ‘The Runners’ saying that it “charms, then frightens…” and we certainly agreed! I advise everyone to read this book all secrets are revealed and you shouldn’t be afraid to cry. Read this book and I promise you won’t regret it!
Special thanks to Ms.Flynn, Ms.Carey & Martin Maughan for bringing us- we really appreciate it :)
