On the 8th November a chess competition took place in the school library. The competition was run by librarian, Ms. Flynn and science teacher and chess coach, Mr. Fernandez. Five schools took part- St. Aidan’s C.S. and the four visiting schools; St. Paul’s C.B.S, North Brunswick St., Dublin, Terence MacSwiney Community College, Cork, St. Kevin’s Community College, Crumlin and James' Street C.B.S., Dublin.
The atmosphere in the library was great and everyone was very welcoming to the other schools. All the participants played very well but unfortunately the St. Aidan’s team captain, Jamie Doyle, did not make the final. First year student, Jake Franklin, came in second place. He told me “I was shocked to make it to the final and I thought my team mates played really well”. A boy named Alex, from St. Pauls C.B.S. took the winning place. The staff and students of St. Aidan’s were very happy for him and for all the runner-ups.
Sr. Ann said that there was a fantastic atmosphere in the library and there was good work done at the blitz. She added that behaviour had been great and our St. Aidan’s students were very welcoming to the visiting schools.
Librarian, Ms. Flynn, loved having a full blitz in the library and said she really enjoyed it. She added that she hopes it will happen again next year and that she couldn’t thank the teachers enough. Mr. Fernandez also thought that it was a brilliant day that was enjoyed by all the schools and said that he can’t wait for the next one.
The day was definitely a big success and we all look forward to the next blitz and to hearing many more people say CHECK MATE!!
