St. Aidan’s Win Again in JCSP Chess Tournament

The second JCSP Chess Tournament kicked off in James’s Street CBS, Basin Street, Dublin in the Jamebo Library on 3rd May 2012 and featured five schools from within the thirty JCSP Library School’s round the country :- St. Paul's CBS - North Brunswick Street Dublin, James's Street CBS Basin Street Dublin, Terrance MacSwiney Community College, Cork and St. Kevin’s College, Cruml

St. Aidan’s Community School first year chess team captured the title for the second time. Aoife Byrne was the overall winner on the day with Jamie Doyle in second place – a real team effort!

The first year team:- Aoife Byrne, Jamie Doyle, Eden Mayeye, Mathew Clarke, Karl Spellman, Conor White, John Maughan and Tadgh Francis took the trophy back to Tallaght on Thursday, 3rd May, 2012.

The senior team Dean Kavanagh, Lee Scott, Glen Fitzsimmons, Jason Wheelan  and Peter Delaney played an extraordinary game and were great support on the day.
The chess team play chess for two hours a day and attend St. Aidan’s chess lessons three times a week with Mr. Fernandez.

"I like chess because it forces you to think a lot and use your brain," Aoife said.

St catherine’s trip to the zoo

Today 19 April 2012, St Catherine’s, second year class form St Aidan’s Community School took a trip to Dublin Zoo for their C.S.P.E Action Project, they went specifically to look at the Snow Leopards and the Gorillas as the whole project was based on endangered animals.
The class left the school at 10 a.m. this morning, they got the bus into Dublin Zoo as they arrived the FM104 radio crew was outside giving out free jellies, the class got in a picture, already the day was starting off pretty well for the second years.
When the class entered the Zoo each student was handed a map, the adventure was about to begin. The children and the teachers had a few hours to browse around and view the amazing animals, it was fascinating looking at the different types of animals there was a great range of animals to view from the sea-lions to the red panda (firefox) each animal had something special to view.
The students and the teachers got to the centre of the Zoo where there were reptile houses, bird houses, family farm and shops. It was then lunch time and they had half an hour to browse around these places by themselves. When the thirty minutes were up the students and the teachers went to the family farm and viewed the billy goats, sheep and pig, after that it was time for everyone to go to the education centre.
When the students were settled, they were given 4 or 5 photos of animals, the students had to pick one picture and talk about it, they had to nominate one student from each group to stand up and explain why they choose that certain photo. After that it was time to go back out to the animals with a guide who explained information about the animals their habitats, what food they had and what country they originally came from, it was very interesting.
The students took lots of pictures, and really had a great time, they were blessed with the weather, it wasn’t too hot or too cold, it was just mild and dry all day, the overall experience of the day at Dublin Zoo was brilliant everyone had smiles on their faces the whole way home!!

Two goals and an assist by Dylan Lynch propelled St Aidan’s CS to a 3 – 1 victory over Patrician College in the final the Dublin Under 15 Metropolitan Division Three Schools Soccer League in Wayside Wednesday 7th March.
Yet had it not been for two great saves by goalkeeper Conor Callaghan, Aidan’s might well have been playing catch-up heading into the second period.
As it was the first half remained scoreless and, with the wind at their backs after the restart, the Brookfield school took the lead when Lynch latched on to a through ball by Gerry Hughes and dinked it over the reach of the Patrician goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
Eight minutes later it was 2 – 0, Fuhad Sule feeding Sean Quinn who, in turn, steered the ball into the path of Lynch and he again proved his clinical self. Patrician College did make a game of it, however when they pulled one back after Patrick O’Neill broke on to a high ball over the top and fired home.
But with eight minutes remaining Aidan’s served up the insurance score when Darren Cosgrove and Lynch combined to set up substitute David Knowles.
It was certainly a great performance by the Tallaght side which, no doubt, benefitted from some excellent defending by centre halves Dean McKeever and Cosgrove.
The match marked the third straight final for this team which has won two of them. Next up for the school will be the Under 17 Dublin Metropolitan Cup quarter final clash with neighbours Colaiste de hide later this month.
A huge thanks to Mr O’Brien and Mr Tunney won have trained the team all year.

Under 14 Soccer

It was another great year for the U-14 Soccer panel. We reached the Under-14 Dublin final after a series of great matches along the way. The final was held in Tallaght Stadium, the home of the mighty Shamrock Rovers. It was against The Grange Community College, Donughmede. Aidan’s were one nil up at first but were eventually beaten 3-1 by a physical strong Grange side.
Dean Kivlehan scored a wonder goal. It was a goal fit to grace any final. Outstanding performances on the day were put in by Darren Cosgrove, Matthew Rice and Kevin Simpson.
Overall the year was a great journey, unfortunately ending in defeat when we were going for back to back Dublin titles. A huge thank you to Mick Fitzsimons for all his work with the players.

Under 16 Soccer

Congratulations to the U16 Soccer team who recently won the FAIS Metropolitan League final beating Collinstown Park 2:1. The team was captained by Dylan Spellman, and the hero on the day was Dylan Byrne scoring 2 Goals. There were great performances by Matthew Rice, Ola Adeyemo and Armstrong Bekombo. A big thank you to Mr Tunney and Mr Butler who run the team and their coach Mick Fitzsimons.
The team hope to continue their success when the play in the Leinster Cup Final in Carlow on Friday 1st April.

What is racism
People in society are all different. Some of us are small tall and our skin and hair colour very. We have different ideas as we do different things. Some people make judgments on how people look or behave without getting to know them this is called predjudice

Why people are racist
No one is born racist and it can come from any kind of background. There are many reasons why people might follow racist role models perhaps their parents or friends at school are predjudice. Some young people join gangs if most of the members are racist. Then the new member may have to adopt this attitude. The gangs may also blme others

People may believe in sterotypes andhold racist attitude but not an act upon them. Others take action on the street they might join racist organizations even if they are illegal for example in Russia many skinheads groups have sprung up. They have neo nazi views meaning that they follow Adolf Hitler racist nazi ideas were developed in the 1930s. the skinheads
Believe in a pure Russian and hate people from other countries and cultes

Neo nazi skinheads are usually secondary school students nocational students (learning a trade or skills) or young unemployed hoe do we become racist! Experts believe that the skinheads have grown because of the economic crisis in Russia and the upheaval in society after the collapse of the soviet union in the 1990sthe young neo Nazis blame immigrants for their difficulties in their society

What can we do
Some people racism directly they get picked on at school or in the streets. Others under attack as a group perhaps they hear something that is rude about them some see people acting in a racist way even though it is not directed at them
Sometimes you may need to get help from others talk to a friend, relatives teachers you can trust. There are websites and organization that can offer advice it helps to know your rights. Racism is against the law and racist can be punished even if they are children the website is child line

Young Drinkers and the effects of alcohol

Young Drinkers
Teenagers and young adults are especially prone to binge drinking , Rather than drinking just a little alcohol with a meal , teenagers often drink in order to get drunk . Studies have been shown that teenagers who binge drink are more likely to engage in other risky behaviors such as driving while intoxicated , using other drugs and committing crimes .
Accidents , sucide abd violence are some of the most common causes of death for people between the ages of 16 and 25 . Alcohol often plays a part in all three of these .

Effects Of Alcohol
When a person drinks alcohol , it is absorted into the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestines . Once in the Bloodstream , alcohol travels to the brain and other organs in the body . Alcohol effects the brain by causing it to release certain chemicals . These chemicals give the drinker a plesant feeling . Alcohol also weakens the brains ability to communicate with the body . Alcohol Effect on a person depends on several factors . People who drink on an empty stomach or who are not used to drinking will be feel the effects more than larger people . In addition , each persons body chemistry is unique , so each person will feel the effects of alcohol in a different way .
1. Alcohol enters through the mouth .
2. It goes to the stomach , some of it is absorted into the bloodstream .
3. It goes through the small intestine and more is absorted into the bloodstream .
4. Alcohol is carried in the bloodstream to every organ in the body .
